The American Cockroach

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

That is correct America has its own cockroach. There are several species of large roaches, some up to 1-1/2 inches long, most are often found outside. American cockroaches generally live in moist areas, but can survive in dry areas if they have access to water. They breed in any type of mulch or compost that is commonly found in your yard. This includes pine bark, pine straw, leaves, dead trees, woodpiles and driveway walls. Due to the large size and slow development of American cockroaches, large infestations of these insects are not common within houses. However, during certain times of the year, these cockroaches may move inside a house from outside sources.

The first steps toward control involve no chemical at all. Just caulk all penetrations through ground level walls. Stop water leaks, and take overflow water away from buildings. Remove rotting leaves from window wells as well. Move garbage cans out of preferred moist habitat and ventilate moist spaces. However, there are many pest control products available on the market today that can help in prevention.

Effective American roach control is typically achieved with outside only treatments. Thorough application of residual insecticides (see list below) to mulch, wood piles, weep holes, plumbing penetrations will knock out most of the populations. Application of about 3 feet up and 4 feet out away from the foundation with these residuals will give good control. Baiting with Maxforce and Niban are also effective if there is no threat of moisture for a few days. Application of a dust to the cracks and weep holes in the house will provide long-term residual to the main entry points.

If American roaches do enter the structure, application of roach killer to the baseboards, doorways and any openings will definitely get control. With the weather turning nice, you might consider getting some of the best mouse traps and placing them along the baseboards as well.

However, when you begin to explain to them about the electronic cigarette that comes with all nicotine cartridges and a rechargeable battery, they will stop laughing. This will make them do a double take when they see you take a drag on the e-cigarette and blow smoke that is only a vapor mist. Imagine their surprise when they do not smell the typical cigarette smoke odor!
